CHERRY HILL
GOLF COURSE ENDS FISCAL YEAR IN THE BLACK
Cherry Hill
Golf Course ended the 2007 fiscal year, which closed on
June 30, 2007, with a $7,179.90 surplus. This was the
first year Cherry Hill has shown a surplus in many years
and reflects a 12% growth in revenues over the previous
fiscal year. Amherst Leisure Services took over operation
of the course in mid August of 2006. Barbara Bilz,
Assistant Director for Amherst Leisure Services and the
individual responsible for golf operations at Cherry Hill
attributes the surplus to, “changes in the overall
direction and management of the course as well as
improvements to course and clubhouse conditions at Cherry
Hill. The course is incredibly beautiful and is a
tremendous resource for the town. My goal has always been
to increase the number of individuals who utilize the
facility. That means attracting new golfers as well as
non-golfers to the property” Special emphasis this
year has been placed on expanding outreach to the three
fastest growing market segments in the golf industry:
women, children and minorities. Several new programs and
initiatives were implemented this year including:
· First
ever Women’s Clinic (a series of six nights of group
lessons) held in May and June – 75 participants, so large
it needed to be split into 2 nights.
· First
ever Youth Clinic (a series of four nights of lessons – 20
participants). Sticks for Kids Grant, $1500. Provided
bags, clubs and other equipment to kids ages 5-17 who
could not afford to purchase clubs or other equipment.
· Expansion
of Women’s League – 70 participants.
· The
addition of new outside tournaments.
In addition Ms. Bilz has worked to
expand collaborations with the University of Massachusetts
including:
· Collaboration
with UMASS Stockbridge School to provide course
improvements.
· Collaboration
with UMASS Conference Services for marketing purposes.
· Collaboration
with UMASS Hospitality and Tourism Dept. in an advisory
capacity.
· Collaboration
with UMASS Professional Women’s Network offering special
clinic to members.
The Friends of Cherry Hill, an
advisory group, has been instrumental in helping to assist
in the expansion of offerings at Cherry Hill and Ms. Bilz
says she has been grateful for their on-going support.
She plans to continue to build on the success of this
season. New specials will be introduced as well as more
events that bring non-golfers to the course. This coming
